How Waiting Periods May Work in Final Expense Insurance

Pending compliance review · Last reviewed October 11, 2026

Short answer: Some final expense policies limit the death benefit for non-accidental death during an initial period, often two years. Others pay the full benefit once the policy is in force.

Level, graded, and guaranteed issue

Level-benefit plans generally pay the full death benefit once the policy is in force, subject to policy terms.

Graded-benefit plans may pay a reduced amount in early years for non-accidental death.

Guaranteed-issue plans don’t ask health questions but commonly return premiums paid (sometimes with interest) instead of the full benefit for non-accidental death during the waiting period.

Why they exist

Waiting periods let insurers offer coverage with little or no health underwriting. Your health answers often determine which type you may qualify for.

Questions to ask

How long is the waiting period? What is paid if death occurs during it? Are accidental deaths covered right away? Will my premium stay level?

Frequently asked questions

Can I avoid a waiting period?

If your health answers qualify you for a level-benefit plan, there may be no waiting period. It depends on the insurer.
