How Indexed Universal Life Insurance Works

Pending compliance review · Last reviewed October 11, 2026

Short answer: IUL is permanent life insurance with flexible premiums and cash value that earns interest based partly on a market index, within a cap and usually a floor.

The basic structure

Your premium pays the cost of insurance and policy charges. What remains goes into cash value.

Interest is credited to cash value using an index-linked formula. Your money is not invested in the market.

Caps, participation rates, and floors

A cap limits the maximum credited rate. A participation rate determines how much of the index gain counts. A floor, often 0%, limits index-related losses.

These factors vary by insurer and can change over time.

Keeping it healthy

Charges are deducted every month, even in 0% years. Underfunding, loans, and withdrawals can reduce cash value and cause the policy to lapse. Annual reviews matter.

No. While a floor limits index-related losses, charges, loans, and underfunding can reduce value and cause lapse.
